The Doctor in Periodontology (DrPerio) is a three-year clinical coursework programme designed to provide advanced specialist training in periodontology and implantology. The programme focuses on the comprehensive diagnosis and management of patients requiring periodontal and implant treatments, while developing students’ ability to provide holistic care as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Students receive extensive clinical and academic training through seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, small-group discussions, simulation-based clinical skills training, and hands-on patient treatment. Training covers non-surgical and surgical periodontal procedures, implant surgery and restorations, aesthetic soft-tissue procedures, clinical audits, and community-based activities.
Students are also required to complete an original research project in Periodontology under the guidance of a research supervisor. The research findings are developed into a thesis, with opportunities for scientific papers to be submitted for publication. The programme forms part of a specialist training pathway that can lead to recognition as a Periodontology specialist under the Malaysian Dental Act 2018, subject to the applicable requirements.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree: A Bachelor’s Degree in Dentistry or an equivalent qualification.
Clinical Experience: Minimum of two years of clinical experience after graduation.
Master’s Degree: A Master of Orofacial Sciences with an elective module in Periodontology, or an equivalent Master’s programme by coursework.
Professional Registration: Applicants must be registered with the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC). International dentists must be registered with the relevant dental regulatory authority in their country and be eligible to obtain a Temporary Practising Certificate (TPC) from the MDC.
