The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering at Asia Pacific University (APU) is a research-intensive doctoral programme designed for individuals who aspire to advance engineering knowledge through innovative research and technological discovery. The programme prepares candidates to investigate complex engineering challenges, develop cutting-edge solutions, and contribute meaningful advancements to engineering science and industrial practice.
Students conduct independent research under the supervision of experienced academic experts while developing specialised knowledge in their chosen area of engineering. Research opportunities span a broad range of disciplines, including sustainable development, renewable energy, power electronics, artificial intelligence applications in engineering, data analytics, wireless communication, engineering materials, nanotechnology, signal and image processing, robotics, medical image processing, and other emerging engineering technologies.
Throughout the programme, candidates undertake rigorous research that culminates in the submission of a doctoral dissertation demonstrating original contributions to engineering knowledge. The research process enhances critical thinking, innovation, advanced technical expertise, and research methodology, enabling graduates to solve real-world engineering problems and drive technological progress.
The programme also develops strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership capabilities, preparing graduates for senior careers in academia, research organisations, government agencies, high-technology industries, and engineering consultancy. Upon graduation, candidates are well equipped to shape the future of engineering through research excellence, innovation, and professional practice.
Students enrolled in the PhD in Engineering may choose to participate in the optional APU–DMU Dual Degree Scheme. Upon successful completion of the programme, participants receive two degree certificates and academic transcripts—one awarded by Asia Pacific University (APU), Malaysia, and another by De Montfort University (DMU), United Kingdom. Participation in this scheme is optional and requires an additional fee of GBP 375 per year.
Applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements:
A recognised Master's degree in a related discipline approved by the APU Senate; or
An equivalent qualification to a Master's degree that is accepted by the APU Senate.
